OVERVIEW
This webinar provides an overview of the City Learning Lab approach as a collaborative method for framing climate-related problems and solutions. The concept of City Learning Labs is based on the principles of social learning labs: processes that engage a variety of stakeholders in finding solutions for a specific question or problem that they all perceive as relevant and urgent. This process embraces the complexity of cities, knowledge creation in cities, and the principles of social and adult learning. The core idea of this process is that all participants are encouraged to share views, needs, insights, research, etc. on a specific problem or burning question.

Bettina Koelle – Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre
Bettina holds a Master’s Degree in Geography, Cartography and Anthropology from the Free University of Berlin. She’s been working in the development field since 1997, focusing in trans-disciplinary research and participatory methods. She’s involved in climate change adaptation working with rural communities, training, social research, and organizational development. Bettina is also undertaking her PhD studies in the field of climate change adaptation – focusing on how to include communities in the adaptation process to increase communal resilience to climate change.
Richard Jones – UK Met Office
Richard is a Science Fellow and manages work on generating and applying regional climate information and modelling systems with a focus on international development. Richard has a PhD in Mathematics and was a lead author of the regional climate information chapters of IPCC Assessment Reports Three (Chapter 10) and Four (Chapter 11). He led the development of the regional climate modelling system PRECIS and has worked with institutes across all continents in the fields of climate prediction and climate scenario development.
Chris Jack – CSAG, University of Cape Town
Chris comes from a background of computer science, oceanography and climatology and is currently employed to run the high-end computing for the group. This involves building, managing and debugging (emphasis on debugging!) a few computational clusters. Chris is also largely responsible for doing long-term climate simulations using the MM5 regional model running on the clusters. Besides that, he is trying to develop an understanding of southern African regional moisture transport and recycling.
Gilbert Siame – University of Zambia
Gilbert holds a PhD and a MSc in City and Regional Planning from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Dr Siame is the convener of the MSc in Spatial Planning Programme in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Zambia where he is also a co-founder and current Director of the Centre for Urban Research and Planning (CURP). Dr Siame’s research interests and projects include among others urban informality, urban sustainability, urban governance, planning education, transdisciplinary research methods, and the interface of planning theory and practice in the global South. He is the founding coordinator of EPIC Africa.
